about

In 1992 I sent a copy of Angelicate's 'Compendium II' cassette to Toronto label DOVe looking for distribution. Label head Gerald Belanger wrote back suggesting I do a CD with them. That CD didn't happen for various reasons. A few years previous I had developed an interest in the often intriguing, very anonymous techno sounds emerging from Detroit, Berlin and the UK and had been dabbling since 1990 or so. In 1993 Gerald put together a deal with London's Ninja Tune for a series of EPs and asked me if I wanted to do one, which I did. 'Chaosphere' was the second record in the series, released as Automata in September 1993. A 2x12" and another EP (and many tracks which remained homeless) were recorded as well but not released. The material from the former is included here, bookended by the two mixes of the title track from the EP. Much other similar material from the same time will remain in the vaults.

I have occasionally recorded things descending from this line over the years, though none for release.
